Main text in black ink, rubrics in red, capitals touched in red.
(f. 1r): opening decorated initial ‘A’ over 7 lines in blue. The initial has reserved interior shapes and is surrounded by a complex flourishing and floral shapes in red.
(f. 274r): plain chapter initial ‘E’ over 6 lines in blue surrounded by a complex flourishing and floral shapes in red.
(ff. Br–Cv): plain initials over 2-3 lines in red.
(ff. 1r–327r): plain initials over 1-5 lines in red, some with reserved interior shapes. Some initials, e.g. on (f. 108r), extend into the margin with a flourish.
(ff. 47r–264r): penwork initials over 2 lines in black, touched in red or with red flourishing.
Besides the main initial scheme consisting of different types of plain red initials and small penwork initials (most frequently on the top line), the manuscript also contains several sets of more idiosyncratic initals: (f. 80r): puzzle initial over 3 lines in red and black. (f. 81r): puzzle initial over 12 lines in red and black. The initial has reserved interior shapes and extends into the margin. (f. 95r): gold initial over 3 lines, placed on a green field. f. 99v, 279v, 321v, 325v, 327v: plain initials over 2 lines in black ink (perhaps a later addition?). (f. 296v): plain initials over 2 lines alternatig in blue, red, and green. (f. 305v): missing initial. (ff. 320r–321r): plain initials over 1 line in green.
Ordo and canon missae: (f. 137r): decorated initial ‘T’ over 6 lines. The letter body is made up of blue foliate shapes that extend into a frame; the enclosed space is filled in purple with diamonds and circle pattern in gold. From the initials three vines extend into the margins to form a frame. They are painted in purple, yellow and green.

Medieval binding. Red leather over wooden boards. 3 double raised bands and endbands. Corner pieces and bosses in brass.

Blind tooled concentric panels filled with geometrical and foliate patterns.

Acquisition
According to the old library catalogues, the missal has belonged to the National Library since the 17th century. The note on f. SL1r refers to the catalogue of 1734 (U 125e), where it is listed as ‘Theol in 4o no 12’.
