Binding

Description:

Early modern binding. Light brown leather over wooden boards. 4 double raised bands and endbands. Spine, stamped in gold: ‘A 224’.

Binding dimensions: 310 × 225 × 60 mm

Tooling:

Simple blind tooled decoration consisting of panels and x-shapes.

Condition: According to a librarian's note from the 19th century the binding has been repaired. The front cover had been detached and the spine was very worn. Before the repair the spine had a sticker attached to it, on which ‘n^o 18’ was written.

Origin

Italy?, 15th-16th century. Origin and dating conjecture based on the script.

Provenance

Exact origin and early provenance unknown. The manuscript has been at the National LIbrarysince the 17th century. The two signa on f. 1r refers to Jaches's catalgoue of 1698 (U 122), where it is listed as ‘214’; and the catalogue of 1734 (U 125e), where it is listed as ‘Theol. in 4^o nr 8’.
